Perimeter initiatives lauded by CCAE

The Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education honoured Perimeter’s efforts with two Prix d’Excellence awards.

After a resounding debut last year at the Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education (CCAE) awards, Perimeter Institute this year took home awards for initiatives in educational outreach and publications.

The annual Prix d’Excellence awards recognize achievements in educational advancement across Canada, with a focus on alumni affairs, public affairs, communications, marketing, advancement services, and overall institutional advancement.

Perimeter’s Publications team took home silver in the “Best Print Magazine” category for the Fall/Winter 2018/19 issue of Inside the Perimeter magazine. The free, semi-annual magazine aims to give readers a glimpse into the often opaque — and frequently intimidating — realm of theoretical physics by sharing accessible and engaging articles on research, institutional news and events, and the people behind the science.

Meanwhile, the bronze in “Best Use of Multi-Media” went to Perimeter’s Educational Outreach team for the interactive website, QuantumToCosmos.ca. The web interactive, launched in October 2018, takes visitors on a journey spanning the entire known universe, from the Planck length (the smallest fundamental limit) to the size of the observable universe. As they navigate, visitors can explore fascinating phenomena, play games, and share selfies.

Perimeter Director of Publications Natasha Waxman, Educational Outreach Senior Manager Marie Strickland, and members of Perimeter’s Advancement team attended the awards ceremony, which was part of the CCAE National Conference, in Kanata, Ontario, on June 5.

“Relating the ongoing adventures of a band of explorers trying to understand the secrets of the universe is a challenge, but it’s also a great human story. It’s truly gratifying to learn that others see it that way too,” said Waxman.

About PI

Perimeter Institute is the world’s largest research hub devoted to theoretical physics. The independent Institute was founded in 1999 to foster breakthroughs in the fundamental understanding of our universe, from the smallest particles to the entire cosmos. Research at Perimeter is motivated by the understanding that fundamental science advances human knowledge and catalyzes innovation, and that today’s theoretical physics is tomorrow’s technology. Located in the Region of Waterloo, the not-for-profit Institute is a unique public-private endeavour, including the Governments of Ontario and Canada, that enables cutting-edge research, trains the next generation of scientific pioneers, and shares the power of physics through award-winning educational outreach and public engagement.
