Perimeter Institute - ICTP South American Institute for Fundamental Research Postdoctoral Fellowship

Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics and the ICTP South American Institute for Fundamental Research (SAIFR) in Sao Paulo invite applications each year for a four-year joint postdoctoral fellowship. Perimeter and SAIFR share several activities including a joint faculty position, and the joint postdoctoral fellow will have the unique opportunity to closely interact with physicists in both hemispheres.

Perimeter Institute is located west of Toronto, in Waterloo, Canada, and was founded in September 1999 as an independent institute supporting research in foundational areas of theoretical physics such as classical gravity, condensed matter theory, cosmology, particle physics, quantum fields and strings, quantum foundations, quantum information, and quantum gravity. The Institute offers an exceptional research environment and is currently staffed with 40 full-time and part-time faculty members, 54 Distinguished Visiting Research Chairs, 55 Postdoctoral Researchers, 61 Graduate Students, and 31 exceptional master’s-level students participating in Perimeter Scholars International. Perimeter also hosts hundreds of visitors and conference participants throughout the academic year. For more information please visit the website at .
The ICTP South American Institute for Fundamental Research (SAIFR) is located in the center of São Paulo and was created in 2011 as the first partner institute of the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste. In addition to organizing PhD schools and workshops in all areas of theoretical physics, SAIFR faculty and associated members perform research in areas including astrophysics, complex systems with applications to biology, condensed matter theory, cosmology and general relativity, gravitational waves, mathematical physics, theoretical and experimental particle physics, physics of cold atoms, QCD and hadronic physics, and string theory. SAIFR is located in the Instituto de Física Teórica (IFT) building of the UNESP university, and its members collaborate closely both with the IFT researchers and with the over 200 physics faculty at the neighboring USP, UFABC and UNICAMP universities. The joint Perimeter-SAIFR fellowships are four year positions split evenly between Sao Paulo and Waterloo and are a natural extension of the already existing and very successful partnership between Perimeter and SAIFR (see news item here for more information). The two years in Sao Paulo will be supported by the local science research council FAPESP. Besides spending two years at each institution, the existing partnership between Perimeter and SAIFR can be used to support the fellow to easily travel back and forth between either institutions during his/her stay at the other institution so that the opportunity for producing strong research bounds is maximized.
We welcome all candidates to apply before December 1st, 2017, however applications will be considered until the position is filled. Importantly, the covering letter should include a statement about the candidate’s interest in this specific Waterloo/Sao Paulo joint program
Applicants must submit: curriculum vitae, a statement of research interests, a list of publications, and arrange for at least three letters of reference to be sent on their behalf. Applications (including recommendation letters) must be submitted through Perimeter Institute's online application form.
All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however Canadian citizens and Permanent Residents will be given priority. Perimeter Institute and SAIFR encourage applications from all qualified individuals, including women, members of visible minorities, native peoples and persons with disabilities.
